Rike is a successful doctor, who intends to use her holiday to sail from Gibraltar to a small island in the middle of the Atlantic. After a storm, her beautiful adventure suddenly turns into an unprecedented challenge when she spots a badly damaged refugee boat nearby. More than a hundred people face drowning and Rike tries to organise help, but she increasingly feels that humanitarianism has deteriorated into mere wishful thinking. Wolfgang Fischer’s film, inspired by true events, illustrates how economic interests compete with humanitarian principles, how excessive demand usurps compassion, and how indifference destroys all hope. The ocean becomes the scene of an allegorical, existential drama.
