It is the final day of Agnes, who lies in bed with cancer. Her most dear ones, her sisters, Maria and Karin, and a companion Anna watch over her. The four women want strength to face life, to overcome fear, to remove the curtain from behind which they look and admire, but do not go forth to touch.    In a film as formal as a clock's tick, Bergman restricts his palette to colors of blood, but his close-ups to the image of the soul. An intensely felt work that is one of Bergman’s most striking formal experiments, “Cries and Whispers”, which won an Oscar for the extraordinary colour photography by Sven Nykvist, is a powerful depiction of human behavior in the face of death, positioned on the borders between reality and nightmare, tranquility and terror.
